I guess we can now use "subscribes to NYT bestselling author Rebecca Makkai's substack and she might recognize our name if we showed up at a signing" as a blurb. Woo-hoo!

I wrote a poem once using only famous first lines of literature. Here are two stanzas:

Once upon a time two or three weeks ago,

I saw the best minds of my generation

borne back ceaselessly into the past.

The past is a foreign country;

they do things differently there.

It was the best of times

the worst of times.

I was born with a gift of laughter

and a sense that the world was mad.

And for a long time,

I went to bed early.

Congratulations on NYT!! So well deserved.

I started seriously reading fiction again for the first time in many years about 18 months ago when I realized how well audiobooks fit into my life right now. TGB was hands down the best book I read/listened to in 2022 and I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve recommended it to. My mom’s book club is reading it now. I think I wrote here in another comment that when I finished it, I immediately started it over and listened to much of it again; I wanted to spend more time with the characters, more leisurely, now that I knew them. I haven’t done that with any other book I’ve listened to, until IHSQFY. I’m most of the way through it for the second time, noticing different things, understanding the characters better, and I don’t want to let it go! Bodie and I have had very different lives, but Im high school class of ‘94, so the mid-90s teenage life and reference points have been a special treat. Plus, yknow, the story and your exceptional writing. It’s wonderful, thank you.

And thank you for the beautiful map! I just saw it and now I’m trying to overlay onto the map I’ve got in my head. I went to Mount Holyoke College and I’ve basically been picturing Granby as the MHC campus- beautiful old buildings, a river, woods.

I’ve got The Hundred Year House queued up on Libby, but I’m going to miss Bodie! Looking forward to seeing you in NYC with Allison Stewart.

Huge congratulations on making the list! I took a seminar on Interiority with you a few years back and since then have read all your stuff. Especially loved IHSQFY.

Btw, Rebecca, I changed from Audible to Libro.fm, and shall continue reading "IHSQFY" in audiobook, which is my preference anyway. But I do like having a signed copy.

Kids is definitely an awkward choice though the movie that my now-husband and I saw on our first date was even more awkward: Farinelli.
