Rebecca, this story is fascinating and inspirational. I’m going to read all of your posts, probably one a day, to get a better feel for the author behind the words. From what little I know about you, you carry a great burden (I don’t know what it is, but I’m gonna go with my gut on this one). Thanks for sharing.
Love this! A curated list! and great timing (for me)...I started reading the email newsletter from wordswithoutborders.org at the beginning of 2022 for new shorter translations, recs, and with great intentions but having a curated list is even better!
I love this project, and would love to "catch up" but I have to be realistic. Right now I am behind in pretty much everything and refuse to hand myself another thing to worry about. However, I fully intend to meet you on the road, so to speak, at some point on this literary world tour.
You painted a wonderful picture of your father! The 16 languages bit reminded me of my great-grandfather, who was also a Habsburgian intellectual with a colorful back story. When he came to the US at the beginning of the 20th century, he put his linguistic prowess to work as an interpreter at People's Gas in Chicago. I'd be curious to compare Dedka Jan's language list with that of Makkai Adam.
Oh yeah, wondering what 16 languages are. I'm guessing Hungarian, English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Rumanian, Dutch and then perhaps Yiddish, Finnish, Swedish, Portuguese and some minor dialect, like Frisian. And he probably wasn't as afraid of learning new writing systems, so perhaps Armenian, Hebrew and Arabic. How close did I get?
A close friend from my days at NYU, Michael Moore, just published a new translation from the Italian of Manzoni's The Betrothed. It's getting a lot of press. A big fat, but from what I can read about it, well worth it. He also has done wonderful new translations of Primo Levi and Alberto Moravia.

Love this project! Just curious. How long does it take you to read a book? I’m going to try and keep up with you!
I've been slower than intended! I'm trying to do one every two weeks on average, but it's been a bit slower than that...
